1st GRADE

MRS. CATHI HANSEN – Teacher

Last Wednesday was a Very Important Day for the first grade. The children and some Very Important People enjoyed some class time together. Each first grader acted as a reporter, conducting an interview to learn some very important facts about our guests. More than 25 visitors filled the room. The interviews revealed that our classroom held citizens born as early as Franklin Roosevelt’s presidency (our 32nd president) and as recently as Ronald Reagan’s presidency (our 40th president). The visitors were given a poetry assignment as both child and guest illustrated poems. Later, in Eric Carle style, they worked cooperatively on a tissue paper art project. What a busy morning! We loved sharing time with these special people. Mrs. Hansen

The first graders want you to know about some wonderful people who share time with them each week. We call them our Reading Grandparents. On Wednesday afternoons, a first grader and his/her volunteer grandparent read, do a written assignment and play a game together. The first grader meets with the same "grandparent" each week throughout the year to form a special relationship. This bond can last beyond the first grade year. Past first graders will stop by the library on Wednesdays to greet former "grandparents." We thank God for these volunteers who enjoy spending time with His little ones. Mrs. Hansen

Our first graders have been extremely busy We hardly know where to begin! Of course, reading is always a big part of first grade and we’ve been doing lots of it. Our class has already read over 75 books together. When we read 100, Scholastic Book Clubs will donate books to children who need them. Learning about authors is interesting. Norman Bridwell, Kevin Henkes, and David Shannon are three we have studied so far. We have begun doing our own writing, too. On September 11, we drew pictures to show our pride in America. Creation and the flood have been the Bible stories during the last few weeks. There’s so much more, but you’ll need to wait for our next update. God bless you. Mrs. Hansen
