CALUMET REGION SCIENCE FAIR AT IUN
Congratulations to our young scientists! TIMES SPELLING BEE
6th grader Ellen Scoleri and 8th grader Haley Boblink won the Times District Spelling Bee and competed to the very end at the Regional Spelling Bee, where Haley became the 2006 Eighth Grade Runner-up for the whole IL/IN region at the Annual Times Spelling Bee. Photos, click here.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY BEE
High praise to 8th grader Gilbert King for qualifying for the Geography Bee State Finals in Indianapolis!

ST. PAUL'S CONCERT & BEGINNING BAND
All band students in 5-8th grade participated in the annual ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Competition. St. Paul's Band Ensembles who ALL won gold medals at ISSMA statewide instrumental competition! In addition, soloists won 19 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal! Beginning Band members in 4th grade participated in the CYO contest in Highland. Both bands performed beautifully at the the Christmas Concert, the Spring Musical, VIP Day, and the last day of school.

ST. PAUL'S JAZZ BAND & WORLD DRUMMING
For the first year ever, Mr. Robbins directed a jazz ensemble, which met on Monday afternoons, learned about the concepts of this truly American art form, and even had a chance to write and perform their own jazz compositions!

World Drumming was an after school group that met and learned to play on drums from a variety of cultures. They showed their stuff at the Spring Musical and on the last day of school.

ACADEMIC BOWL
Our students represented St. Paul’s at the regional Academic Bowl in LaPorte, IN for 4th and 5th graders. St. Paul's team came in second overall out of thirteen teams!

PRESIDENTIAL PHYSICAL FITNESS AWARDS
Scoring is very tough in a month-long set of physical challenges from the mile run to chin-ups. Nine students earned the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Award: Eighth graders Kelly Cantrell, Katie Dobis and Jeremy Ridder, seventh grader Jack Cundiff, sixth grader Katie Engel, fifth graders Josh Heintz and Olivia Wagner, third grader Jacob Vervlied and first grader Brittany Anderson "made the grade" in this nationwide event and earned a tee shirt, patch and certificate.

ANNUAL ART SHOW
This year the annual art show in May housed over ninety entries from 74 talented artists in K-8th grade. New this year was a private evening reception held for artists and their parents on opening night, complete with punch and cheese & crackers, and with great attendance! For the first time, gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded for outstanding creativity, originality, and craftsmanship. A blue crystal trophy was donated for the awarding of the Best of Show prize, assisted by 3 parent jurers. This year's prize was awarded to Katie Engel (6) for her "Square." he also received a portable easel and stool set.

F.A.M.E. CONCERT OF COLORS
Five SP students artworks were selected to be shown during a special performance of the Northwest Indiana Symphony, attended by the artists in February: Abigail Kiesling (1), Zoe Olgy (4), Sarah Smolinski (3), Paige Reed (3), Darby Smith (2).

STUDENT COUNCIL
Student Officers Rachael Heiniger (8), Jordan Newman (8), Gilbert King (8), and Julia Groszek (8), Haley Boblink (8) led the Council in activities which included: two Middle School dances, 6 Spirit Days, Jambalaya Dinner for Hurricane Victims (raised over $1,000), Hoops for Hearts activity (nearly $1,000 raised), and serving as tour guides, lunch help, and clean-up crew for Open House and VIP Day.

HEARTWARMERS
Heartwarmers is a group of students dedicated to spending one-on-one time with seniors in nursing homes after school. This excited set of students from all ages made bi-monthly visits to Hartsfield Care Center and Dyer Nursing Home for games, activities, and birthday posters with the residents.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST (BASIC)
Volunteers from 6-8the grade have the opportunity to serve Christ by working with students in K-5 as mentors and tutors, individually or in small groups. This group was born this year out of a small group of sixth graders and their vision for helping others. Now the group has 28 members!

GRADUATION
Three students finished their Middle School careers at St. Paul's by addressing fellow students and SP faculty at a very special graduation service–the first worship service back in the newly renovated sanctuary. Valedictorian, Haley Boblink, Salutatorian: Nicole Reinsma, and Victoria Hole addressed the class motto, "The journey has just begun, the rest is still unwritten." Julie Puvogel also gave a reply as 7th grade representative. The Christus Spiritus Award was given to Rachael Heiniger. Graduates will be attending Munster HS, Bishop Noll, Marian CHS, Illiana CHS, TF South HS, Crown Point HS, Lake Central HS, Highland HS. Of those attending private secondary schools, four received academic scholarships.
