Sunday School at home: 1-2-3

To support you in teaching your children and your own learning, the Board of Family Life is providing age-appropriate resources from preschool to adult for you to use to help you and your children learn more about what God has done and is doing for you through Jesus. We will be focusing on one Bible account a month that show us how we can have hope in God through whatever may happen in our lives. We will use St. Paul's school theme verse, Psalm 28:9, which reminds us of God's blessing and salvation in our lives and for all eternity.
Start by watching the video below for the theme story, things to think about, a craft, family challenge activity, field trip, and connections to worship. Then throughout the month, we encourage you to do any/all of these activities together:
  • Read the Bible passage together, sometimes with summary video
  • Memorize the theme verse
  • Connect the monthly theme to a section of Luther's Small Catechism
  • Connect the monthly theme to a part of our worship service liturgy
  • Do a service opportunity together as a family
  • Participate in our monthly challenge for a chance to win a prize
  • Do other theme activities/games
  • Create a craft and/or snack on the monthly theme
  • Check out more resources you can use anywhere

SERVICE PROJECTS:
Jesus uses the description of a shepherd to show us how much He loves us. A shepherd guides sheep to proper food and fresh water, and protects sheep from dangers like wolves. Like sheep, we need guidance to do what is right and protection from evil around us. We don’t do the things that we are supposed to and often wander away from what God intends for us to do.
But Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, is always there to see us through the darkest valleys and bring us to green pastures. Jesus even gave up his life for us when He died and rose from the dead. Because of His sacrifice for us, we are forgiven of all our wrongs and made children of God. Read about them in John 10:11-18.
  • For Preschool,  remind them that we are all precious to Jesus.
  • For Early Elementary, Talk about how Jesus brings us to Him.
  • For Late Elementary, talk about the work of a shepherd and protection over the flock, as Jesus guides and protects us like a shepherd.
  • For Junior High, with Jesus we don't get lost in the flock. Jesus knows each one of us.
  • For High School, they often can feel lost and not in control. Jesus guides us through whatever comes in our lives.
  • For Parents, Jesus guides us through the uncertain and struggles of this world. As our children see us trust in God, they will also trust in Him.
CATECHISM CONNECTION:
7th Petition of the Lord's Prayer

One of a shepherd’s biggest jobs is keeping their sheep safe. There are a lot of things out there that can cause great harm to the sheep, like lions, wolves, bears, thieves, cliffs, sharp rocks, and more. It can be a lot of nasty and scary stuff.  The shepherd’s put themselves in harms’ way to protect the sheep. By themselves, the sheep may not last very long, but with the Shepherd they know they are safe. Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, keeps us safe as well. We pray in the Lord’s Prayer that God will, “deliver us from Evil.”
For Preschool and Elementary, help them to memorize the Apostles Creed and point out when it is done in the service. Remind them that it was Jesus' love that lead Him through all of that.
For Junior High:
  • Hear about the 7th Petition of the Lord's Prayer from the Small Catechism.
For Senior High and Adults:
  • Check out more from the Large Catechism.
LITURGY/WORSHIP CONNECTION: Readings
Through Scripture readings we can better understand how God works for us. Like a shepherd, Jesus guides us on the right path, even when we are being stubborn. He gives us things that are difficult to hear and do, because the sinful nature inside of us wants us to be selfish and prideful. But the Good Shepherd knows what is best. Most of all, He cares for His sheep. He laid down His life for us so that our sins would be forgiven and we can live forever with God in heaven. He protects us and loves us beyond anything we could know.
As we look at the readings more and more and hear them again and again, we are given comfort by it and can hold onto God’s promises.
  • For Preschool and Elementary, read through Bible stories with them. Point out God's guidance for those people and for us. Make sure to have a good children's Bible at home.  Arch Books  are great as well.
    • Learn more about Lent with these handouts.
  • For Junior and Senior High, ask them about certain readings on Sunday and what main points they see. How do the readings connect to each other and to the sermon?

LENT ACTIVITIES:

Lent is a time leading up to Easter when we remember all that Jesus went through to forgive us all of our sins. As the Good Shepherd, Jesus laid down His life for us so that we may live. And we, as His sheep, are meant to follow His voice in our lives and go where He leads us. He has already won the victory over sin, death, and the devil so that we are able to live as He intends us.
There are many ways to walk with Jesus, and we ask you to challenge yourself in a new way this Lent. What is something you can do these next 40 days? Maybe read a section of the Bible each morning. Find a Lenten devotional. Volunteer your time to those who need help. One great way would be more prayer for St. Paul’s and its ministries, its staff, its members to be guided and focused on our Savior.
